The New Tampa Weekend: How Locals Are Vacationing Without Leaving Home

TAMPA — For years, a Florida vacation meant packing the car, heading to Orlando or booking a flight somewhere far from home. But for a growing number of Tampa Bay residents, the perfect weekend getaway may now be only a few miles away.

The rise of Tampa's hotels, waterfront restaurants, rooftop bars, spas and entertainment districts has made the stay cation increasingly attractive. Instead of spending hours traveling, locals are checking into hotels in their own backyard and experiencing Tampa as tourists.

Few places demonstrate the transformation better than Water Street Tampa. The neighborhood surrounding Amalie Arena has evolved into a destination of its own, combining restaurants, shopping and luxury accommodations with easy access to the Riverwalk.

At the center of it is The Tampa EDITION, a luxury hotel featuring restaurants, nightlife, a rooftop pool and spa. Nearby, the JW Marriott Tampa Water Street offers another resort-style experience without leaving downtown.

Across the bay, St. Petersburg offers a different version of the local escape. The Vinoy Resort & Golf Club, Autograph Collection combines historic Florida glamour with a resort atmosphere just steps from downtown restaurants, museums and the waterfront.

And then there are the beaches.

A Tampa resident can finish work on Friday afternoon and, within an hour, be watching the sunset from Clearwater Beach or St. Pete Beach. Resorts such as Opal Sands Resort provide the traditional Florida vacation experience—pools, Gulf views and waterfront dining—without the airfare.

The appeal isn't necessarily about saving money. A luxury hotel room, dinner, drinks and a spa treatment can quickly turn a weekend staycation into an expensive proposition.

Instead, it is about convenience.

There are no airports, rental cars or complicated itineraries. You can leave home Friday evening, spend Saturday beside a rooftop or beachfront pool, enjoy dinner overlooking the water and still be home Sunday afternoon.

The trend also reflects something larger happening in Tampa Bay.

For decades, Tampa was primarily the place people lived while Florida's more famous destinations attracted the tourists. That distinction is disappearing. New hotels, restaurants, entertainment districts and waterfront developments have created experiences that locals once traveled elsewhere to find.

Sometimes getting away doesn't require going very far.

In modern Tampa Bay, vacation can begin just across town.
