On April 3, 2022, inside a luxury high-rise in Miami's Edgewater neighborhood, 27-year-old Christian "Toby" Obumseli was stabbed in the chest with a knife wound a medical examiner determined was three inches deep. His girlfriend, Courtney Clenney — an Instagram and OnlyFans model who at the time boasted more than 2 million followers — called 911 herself, telling dispatchers, "My boyfriend is dying of a stab wound... Baby, I'm so sorry." Obumseli died from the wound; Clenney was arrested four months later, in August 2022, while in Hawaii, where her attorney said she had been receiving treatment for substance abuse and post-traumatic stress disorder. She was extradited to Florida and has remained in custody without bond ever since.

Clenney is charged with second-degree murder and has pleaded not guilty, arguing self-defense. Her legal team says the relationship was marked by repeated abuse from Obumseli, not the other way around. A filing obtained by the New York Post outlines text messages the defense plans to use as evidence of at least nine separate instances of abuse before Obumseli's death, including one exchange where Clenney accused him of hitting her "in my face as hard as you could," which he allegedly downplayed as accidental. Prosecutors and Obumseli's family reject that framing entirely; his family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit arguing Clenney was the aggressor throughout the relationship, and an expert retained for that separate civil case has reportedly disputed the strength of the state's own murder theory — which her attorney has seized on, calling the charge overreach and insisting "this was reckless conduct... She called 911 right away, trying to save Mr. Obumseli's life."

The case has been dogged by chaos well beyond the crime itself. Clenney's parents were briefly arrested in 2024 over allegations they improperly accessed Obumseli's personal laptop, charges later dropped after a judge found investigators had improperly viewed privileged defense material. The original lead prosecutor stepped down amid the fallout, and defense attorneys have pushed, so far unsuccessfully, to have the entire Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office disqualified.

As of mid-2026, the case remains unresolved — a trial date has been pushed multiple times, with the most recent reporting pointing to proceedings continuing into the summer, and some indications Clenney may ultimately resolve the case through a plea rather than a full trial. Whichever direction it goes, both sides agree on one thing: the outcome will hinge less on what happened that night than on which version of the relationship the jury believes.
